After leaving Myprotein,  The Protein Works team has started building a comprehensive range of supplements. Today, I’m looking at Pre-Works, which is, you guessed it, one of their pre-workouts.

With 20 intensely-dosed active ingredients, Pre-Works looks brilliant on paper. But how does it stack up against other pre-workout supplements from more established competitors?

          Active Ingredients

Creatine Pyruvate, Creatine Monohydrate, iBCAA, Beta Alanine, L-Arginine Alpha-Ketoglutarate, Citrulline Malate, Caffeine Tri-Blend, D-Aspartic Acid, Taurine, TPW™ Vitamin B Blend, Agmatine Sulphate.

          Effectiveness

Pre-Works comes in three flavours — Berry Blitz, Orange Burst, Tropical Punch — which all taste seriously good. Flavours are obviously a point of pride for The Protein Works and it really shows with Pre-Works.

The mix, unfortunately, isn’t quite so good. Maybe it’s the huge list of ingredients, maybe it’s something else. Whatever, Pre-Works has a tendency to clump up and sit at the bottom of my shaker, waiting to provide a gritty surprise when you tip your shaker back. I’ve had a couple of those gritty surprises. It’s grim.

Once it’s mixed and drunk, Pre-Works is pretty impressive. Each 35g scoop is packed with 27g of active ingredients, including 5g of iBCAAs, 3g Beta Alanine and a huge 5g of creatine.

Everything lands more or less at once, building to a really crazy pump. Even with a pretty high caffeine tolerance, my energy levels were up, my head was squarely in the game and everything was feeling lightweight!

Oh, there was no real crash when it started to wear off or sickness after effects, either.

          Value

Right, Pre-Works is not the cheapest supplement. A 500g tub will set you back about £27.99, which definitely pushes Pre-Works to the edge of the budget price bracket.

However, it’s packed with a tonne of active ingredients: Two types of creatine, three types of caffeine and a bunch of iBCAAs. That makes the price a lot easier to justify.

          Verdict

Pre-Works has quickly pushed its way into my Top 5 for pre-workout supplements and I pick it up whenever there’s a sale or a voucher code flying around.

I highly recommend picking up Pre-Works and testing out the effects for yourself!
